Be sure you have a current bootable backup of your OS X partition. Jul 23, PM. Kappy, thanks for taking the time to read my post and comment. If I was to go the rEFInd way, what would be the procedure from scratch? Will I have issues let's say when Yosemite arrives?

I can't tell you anything about Yosemite or even if rEFInd will be compatible with it. I've never used it, but it's the replacement for an earlier utility called rEFIt that I have used. Essentially, you would setup your desired partition scheme.

You would install whatever operating systems you wanted in each partition. Then you install rEFIt which takes control of the bootloader and configures a boot manager screen in which each available OS is displayed with its own icon. You then click on the OS from which you want to start. Since it does not care that there are other partitions on the drive you can have as many as you want. I assume rEFInd is quite similar.

Download it or read its documentation online. That's the best way to find out what it does. His site has a lot of info on this sort of thing. I have rEFInd setup, but I can't recollect how! I suspect these issues are because of hybrid partition tables. I'm not even sure if you have a hybrid partition so you should read up on it to see if it fits with the situation.

How to Partition Your Hard Drive and Why You Would Want To

Communities Contact Support. When you select a volume that already has data on it, the pie chart shows a shaded area representing the amount of data on the volume and an unshaded area representing the amount of free space available for another volume. Disk Utility also reports whether the volume can be removed or resized.

If you see a small volume with an asterisk, the partition is smaller than can be represented at the correct scale in the chart. Click the Add button. For each volume, click the Format pop-up menu, then choose a file system format. After you partition a storage device, an icon for each volume appears in both the Disk Utility sidebar and the Finder sidebar. To enlarge a volume, you must delete the volume that comes after it on the device, then move the end point of the volume you want to enlarge into the freed space.

Be sure to back up your data before you begin. In the sidebar, select the device that contains the volume you want to enlarge, then click the Partition button. In the pie chart on the left, select the volume you want to remove, then click the Remove button.
